This course provides an overview of the history of the built environment from the beginnings to about 1400 CE. The scope is broad in geographical and cultural terms. Although the prime emphasis is on the Mediterranean basin and the West in general, a substantial number of lectures will be devoted to Asia, Africa, and the pre-Columbian Americas. Our aim is to expose you to the architectural heritage of the past in its social and historical context.
Honors:
-My student, Alexis Dongallo, was awarded the William Stout Prize for Architecture History, 2012 for her outstanding essay entitled Gender Segregation in the Mosque.
